Title:	Dynamical low-rank approximation for kinetic problems

Abstract:	Many phenomena in both space and laboratory plasmas require a kinetic description. These problems exhibit filamentation and are often posed in a high dimensional phase space. Consequently, their numerical solution can be extremely expensive. Although, some dimension reduction techniques, such as particle methods and sparse grids, have been used in the past, those have often met with limited success. In this talk we will explore a dynamic low-rank approximation strategy based on a projector splitting integrator. This approach is particularly appealing as it is able to overcome the curse of dimensionality, while still allowing us to resolve small scale structures in the numerical solution. This makes it ideally suited for solving the type of kinetic problems that are of interest in plasma physicis applications. We will also consider the conservation of physical invariants and the behavior of such methods in the fluid dynamic limit. This is joint work with Christian Lubich and Chiara Piazzola.
