Abstract: The Kuramoto model, introduced by Japanese physicist Yoshiki Kuramoto in the 1970s, is a mathematical framework that describes synchronization in large ensembles of coupled oscillators. Originally motivated by phenomena such as fireflies flashing in unison or neurons firing collectively, the model explains how rhythmic units with heterogeneous natural frequencies can spontaneously synchronize through weak coupling. It has since become a cornerstone in the study of complex systems, capturing the emergence of global coherence from local interactions via a system of phase-coupled differential equations. The model has found broad applications in neuroscience, power grid stability, chemical oscillations, and biological rhythms. In this talk, we focus on the Kuramoto model and its variants, reviewing recent synchronization results from a mathematical perspective, with an approach grounded in the gradient flow formulation.
